On January 31, 1919 Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia. He was the first African American to play professional baseball. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1947 to 1956, was chosen as the National League's most valuable player in 1949 and elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

This 2024 American war drama is based on a true story about the only U.S. Women's Army Corps unit of color stationed overseas during World War II. An army captain (Kerry Washington) leads her historic battalion of all-female soldiers as they face a mission unlike any other: to sort and deliver over 17 million backlogged letters. Over the course of the 2-hour movie we witness their courage and determination as eight hundred and fifty-five join the war effort to address a three-year mail backlog. Despite discrimination and war-torn conditions, they restore hope to WWII’s frontlines yet they were not especially appreciated when returning to US soil at the time. Much later, Michelle Obama oversees a ceremony honoring the 6888.
Avocado Cake
Cut 1 and 1/2 avocados and purée with 1 teaspoon lime juice until creamy. Add 220 grams of room temperature butter, 200 grams of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt and mix well. Add 4 eggs one by one and mix well.
Mix 350 grams of all-purpose flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder and 50 grams of ground almonds.
Add to the bowl of wet ingredients in 2-3 portions in turns with 50 ml of milk.
Pour into a greased 30 cm loaf tin and bake for 60 minutes at 180 °C until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in the tin for several minutes.
While the cake is cooling down, prepare the glaze by mixing 125 grams of confectioner’s sugar with 3 tablespoons of lime juice. Remove the cake from the tin, place on a plate and spread the glaze with a brush on top and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of chopped unsalted pistachios.
