Pacific Saury

Pacific saury, also known as mackerel pike, is a slender, silver-blue fish found in the northern Pacific Ocean, particularly near Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. It is especially popular in autumn, as this is when the fish is at its peak in terms of flavor and fat content. In Japan, where it is called sanma, it is traditionally grilled with salt and served with grated daikon radish and soy sauce. Mackerel pike is appreciated for being both tasty and nutritious, providing high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and protein. However, environmental changes and overfishing have recently led to a decline in its population, raising concerns about its availability and rising prices.

 

Spider Lilies

Spider lilies are beautiful flowers known for their striking, slender petals that curve outward, giving them a unique, spidery appearance. Commonly found in East Asia, especially in Japan and China, these flowers bloom in late summer or early autumn, often growing along riverbanks, roadsides, or near rice fields. In Japan, they are called higanbana and are associated with the autumn equinox, symbolizing transitions and farewells. Although admired for their beauty, they have a bittersweet meaning, as they are often planted around cemeteries and are connected to death and partings in Japanese culture. Additionally, their bulbs are toxic, making them useful for keeping animals away from crops. Spider lilies remind people of the changing seasons and the impermanence of life, making them both symbolic and visually captivating.


Chestnuts

Chestnuts are a type of nut that grow inside spiky husks and are widely enjoyed in many parts of the world, especially in autumn. Unlike other nuts, chestnuts are low in fat but rich in carbohydrates, making them a healthy and energy-boosting snack. They have a slightly sweet flavor and a soft, starchy texture when cooked. Chestnuts can be roasted, boiled, or used in recipes for desserts and savory dishes. In countries like Japan, chestnuts are often added to rice dishes, while in Europe, they are popular in stuffing for poultry or desserts like chestnut purée. However, preparing chestnuts can be time-consuming, as they need to be peeled after cooking. Despite this, their warm and comforting taste makes them a favorite seasonal food around the world.


Koyo (Autumn Foliage Viewing) 

Koyo, or autumn foliage viewing, is a popular tradition in Japan, where people enjoy the beauty of leaves changing color in the fall. As temperatures cool, the leaves of trees like maple and ginkgo turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. This seasonal event typically takes place from late September to early December, depending on the region, with northern areas like Hokkaido experiencing it earlier than places further south. Many people visit parks, temples, and mountains to see the colorful landscapes and take photographs. Koyo is similar to hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in spring, as both involve appreciating nature’s beauty with friends and family. It is not only a visual experience but also a relaxing way to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities, and reflect on the changing seasons.
