Nurse

Unknown.jpeg

Some people have a room in their house for the children, this is called ‘the nursery’, this is where the nurse maid might nurse the baby.  Children aged from 3 to 5 attend a nursery school, and they learn nursery-rhymes. Some young people attend nursing school if they want to become a nurse and work in a hospital.  And some old people live in a nursing home.  If you want to buy some plants for the garden you need to go to the nursery and talk to a nurseryman or nurserywoman.

If you are learning to ski, you should start on the nursery slopes or you might end up in hospital and need to be nursed back to health.  Then you might nurse a grudge against the ski resort. Sitting alone nursing a drink and thinking about all the money you had to fork out for hospital care.

I don’t want to go out tonight I’m nursing a cold.

Bridge

Unknown-1.jpeg

The captain was enjoying a quite game of bridge when the third mate called him to the bridge.  Standing on the bridge he looked out at the water.  He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and looked at the bridge over the water. “Is it high enough?” asked the third mate? “I don’t know”, replied the captain. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” If the ship is too tall, we are in a bind! We can’t go back, we’ve burnt our bridges.  My career will be water under the bridge.

I decided to stop at a restaurant for lunch, I wasn’t happy that I had just forked out $1000 for new tires so I thought I would treat myself to a nice lunch. I couldn’t find the restaurant at first, I came to a fork in the road and took a wrong turn. But I soon realized my mistake and got back on the right road. Now, sitting at a fully laid table with dinner forks, shrimp forks, salad forks and dessert forks and I’m watching the hay being cut in the nearby field. Two workers are using pitch forks to toss the hay onto a truck. Some other workers are using garden forks to dig up the ground and another is toasting some bread on a fire for their midday snack. He’s turning the toast on a toasting fork. A forklift truck stopped in front of my window blocking my view so I turned my attention to the piano tuner. He was striking the tuning-fork and listening to the sound. What a good ear he has! I began to think about the wedding party invitation I had received that morning, it will be a fork buffet at a very swanky restaurant. Unfortunately Brenda will be there, speaking with a forked tongue, but hopefully I can avoid her. As I savour my last forkful of cake the $1000 hole in my pocket seems like a distant memory.

People in their 30s and 40s are the sandwich generation, stuck between caring for their elderly parents and bringing up their own children. They are really taking a big bite out of the reality sandwich. Of course, if they happen to get divorced as a result of this stressful situation, their children will become the meat in the sandwich, shuffling between their alienated guardians. Regardless of the generation they were born into though, when Americans think of a sandwich, they are most likely to think of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but when a British person thinks of a sandwich, they surely picture a cucumber sandwich. I personally like to sandwich the cake together with a little cream but an ice cream sandwich will make me just as happy. But you can put anything in a sandwich and they are quick and easy to eat, especially if you have a sandwich maker to render them super delicious. That is why sandwich shops are so popular nowadays. When I go to one of them, I like my space to be able to enjoy my sandwich and hate sitting at the counter, sandwiched between two large people. Only daydreaming of giving them a knuckle sandwich gets you through a situation like that. The other day I actually saw a sandwich board advertising the opening of a new sandwich bar. My friend is taking a sandwich course but I don`t think she will learn much because the poor thing is a sandwich shy of a picnic. Every time she does get a job, it soon becomes a soup sandwich and she ends up giving up, unable to juggle the chaos that she creates. She`d be better off pressing sandwiches!
